This Easter, we will head deep into the Atlantic to discover the wild side of the Azores. From the volcanic landscapes of São Miguel and the crater lakes of Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, to the mighty 2,351m summit of Mount Pico, the Transatlantic Heritage of Faial Island and the volcanic heart of Terceira, this is a journey through some of the most spectacular landscapes in Portugal.

We will hike through wild trails, chase waterfalls, explore volcanic caves, soak in natural thermal waters, taste Cozido cooked underground and island-hop between four completely different worlds. But this trip is about more than the places we visit — it’s about the trails we share, the challenges we take on, the laughs along the way and the stories we bring home.

The adventure starts long before we reach the islands.

We leave Athens behind and make our way west, with a stop in Portugal before catching our next flight to the middle of the Atlantic.

And then… Olá, Açores! 🌿🌊

Our first stop is São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores — a place of volcanic landscapes, endless green, crater lakes, wild coastlines and tiny villages scattered between the mountains.

Known as the “Green Island”, São Miguel doesn't exactly do boring. Expect lush forests, dramatic viewpoints, steaming volcanic ground and an ocean that seems to stretch forever.

Once we arrive in Ponta Delgada, it’s time to slow down and take our first taste of island life. We

will explore the streets of the old town, wander along the seaside promenade of Ponta Delgada town, pick up a plate of bacalhau (dried and salted cod) at the farmer’s market in Mercado da Graca, or even sample some fresh seafood at the local restaurants.

We’ve just arrived — now let the island do the talking!

Sete Cidades
Into the crater of the Green Island
Today we head west, towards one of the most iconic landscapes in the Azores.

Our adventure begins high above Sete Cidades, a tiny village sitting inside the enormous crater of an ancient volcano. But we are not here just to admire the view. We are here to to walk through it. We will follow a trail down into the crater 🥾!!!

We will cross lush green landscapes and volcanic terrain while the famous twin lakes slowloy reveal themselves below us. From above, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde create one of the most iconic views in the Azores. One that even looks better after earning it on foot the comboride way.

Along the way, expect crater ridges, forest paths, open viewpoints and plenty of those "wait...is this real?' moments.

After the hike, we continue towards the Atlantic coast to discover Mosteiros, where dramatic black volcanic rocks rise from the ocean.

Today is all about getting outside, getting a little muddy and discovering Sao Miguel one trail at a time.

Lagoa do fogo → Furnas
Volcanoes, jungle trails & thermal waters
Today is all about discovering the volcanic soul of São Miguel — starting high in the mountains and finishing in the warm waters of Furnas.

We start the day high in the mountains at Lagoa do Fogo, the “Lake of Fire”, one of the island’s most spectacular natural landscapes. Hidden inside an ancient volcanic crater, the lake sits surrounded by lush green mountains and protected wilderness.

We will follow the trail through native vegetation and volcanic terrain. As we continue our hike, the views open up and Lagoa do Fogo slowly reveals itself below — a deep blue crater lake surrounded by nothing but mountains and nature.

After the hike, we make our way into the Furnas Valley, where the volcano comes alive in a completely different way. Steam rises from the ground, volcanic springs bubble away and the unmistakable smell of sulfur fills the air as we explore the Caldeiras das Furnas.

If times allow, we will taste Cozido das Furnas, a traditional Portuguese stew slow-cooked underground using the natural heat of the volcano itself.

After lunch, we slow things down with a soak in the warm volcanic waters of Poça da Dona Beija, surrounded by the lush greenery of Furnas.

Today, the volcano is our kitchen, our playground and our spa. 🌋♨️🥾

Pico Island
Black earth, lava caves & mountain lakes
Today we leave São Miguel behind and fly west to Pico Island, one of the wildest and most distinctive islands of the Azores.

Known as the “Black Island”, Pico was shaped by lava, wind and the Atlantic. Black volcanic stone covers much of the landscape, while the massive silhouette of Montanha do Pico rises above the island at 2,351 metres — the highest mountain in Portugal.

After arrival and check-in, we will head into the island’s highlands, where volcanic terrain slowly gives way to green pastures, remote roads and peaceful crater lakes. Along the way, we will explore places such as Lagoa do Capitão and Lagoa do Caiado, surrounded by open landscapes and views towards Pico Mountain.

Later, we descend towards the coast to discover Pico’s extraordinary vineyard landscape.

Here, grapevines grow inside small plots protected by walls of black volcanic stone, a unique agricultural system recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From mountain lakes and green highlands to black-stone vineyards and Atlantic views, Pico gives us a completely different first impression of the Azores.

And tomorrow… we go for the summit. 🏔️

Pico Mountain
Above the clouds
Today is the big one.

Rising 2,351 metres above the Atlantic, Montanha do Pico is the highest mountain in Portugal and one of the most unforgettable hikes in the Azores.

We start early and make our way towards the mountain house, where our ascent begins.

For those aiming for the summit, the final section takes us towards Piquinho, the small volcanic cone sitting above Pico’s main crater and marking the true summit.

And then comes the reward:

Atlantic Ocean in every direction.
Faial below us.
São Jorge in the distance.
And the feeling of standing above the clouds in the middle of the ocean.

For participants who prefer a less demanding day, an alternative hiking programme will be available allowing everyone to experience Pico at the level that suits them best.

One mountain.
One island.
One unforgettable challenge.

Pico → Faial island
The Blue Island and Volcanic trails
Today we hop on a ferry to Horta, on Faial Island, the “Blue Island”, It is named for the iconic blue hydrangeas that bloom across its landscapes during summer.

Before hitting the trail, we will head to Cabeço dos Trinta, a volcanic cone surrounded by lush vegetation. Then, it’s time to hit the trail. 🥾🌿 We will follow the Levada Trail. A peaceful route through Faial’s lush interior, following old water channels through dense vegetation and forest. The trail reveals a quieter side of the island, with moss-covered paths, native plants and volcanic landscapes along the way.

The levadas were traditionally built to carry water across the island, and today they offer a unique way to explore Faial on foot — deep into the green heart of the island.

After the hike, we make our way back towards Horta, taking in the changing landscapes and ocean views along the way.

From volcanic cones to hidden forest trails — today we discover why Faial is known as the Blue Island. 🌺🌋🥾

Pico → Terceira island
New Island. New Story
Today we leave Pico behind and continue our Azorean island-hopping adventure towards Terceira.

After days surrounded by the dramatic silhouette of Mount Pico, we arrive on an island with a completely different personality. Terceira, aldo known as the “Purple Island”, combines volcanic landscapes, green countryside, colourful towns and one of the most important historic centres in the Azores.

After arriving and checking in, we start exploring. Our first stop takes us to Serra do Cume, one of Terceira's most spectacular viewpoints. From above, the landscape opens into a huge patchwork of green fields divided by volcanic stone walls, one of those views that makes everyone suddenly stop talking and reach for their cameras. 📸

And if time allows, we will hike in Monte Brasil, an ancient volcanic peninsula rising above Angra, for one final view over the city and the Atlantic, a place whose historic atmosphere and dramatic setting may remind us of our beloved Monemvasia.

Overnight stay in Terceira.

Terceira Island
Every good ComboRide adventure needs a proper finale.

And on this day....going underground.

We head into the wild volcanic landscapes of Terceira for a final adventure through one of the island's most fascinating natural areas.

Our main hiking adventure takes us through Mistérios Negros, a spectacular landscape shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions. We follow trails through dense forests, volcanic terrain and landscapes that feel completely untouched.

And now for the grand finale.

If opening conditions and entry schedules allow, we head to Algar do Carvão, one of the most extraordinary volcanic formations in the Azores.

Here, we have the chance to step inside the heart of an ancient volcano.

Yes, Inside! A! Volcano!

The perfect way to finish our Azorean adventure.

We will return towards Angra do Heroísmo for a relaxed final evening together.

One last dinner.

One last drink.

And plenty of stories from seven days of volcanoes, islands, hikes and Atlantic adventures.

From volcanic craters and mountain trails to underground volcanoes and wild Atlantic landscapes, this is how we finish an Azorean expedition.

Terceira Island → Lisbon → Αθήνα
After breakfast, we say goodbye to Terceira and begin our journey back home.

The bags are a little heavier, the legs a little more tired, and the camera rolls… probably completely out of control. 😂📸

But that's the thing about travelling with ComboRide.

We don't come home with just photos.

We come home with stories, new friendships, unforgettable moments and that feeling that we were truly somewhere.

We leave the Azores behind, but we take a little piece of the islands with us — the wild trails, the Atlantic air, the volcanic landscapes, the laughs around the table and all those moments that can't be planned.

TIPS

Οι Αζόρες είναι ένας προορισμός όπου η φύση κάνει τους δικούς της κανόνες. Ο καιρός μπορεί να αλλάξει πολύ γρήγορα, ακόμα και μέσα στην ίδια ημέρα, οπότε πρέπει να είμαστε προετοιμασμένοι για ήλιο, αέρα, ομίχλη και βροχή.

🌦️ Ο καιρός

Μην ξεγελαστείς από την πρόγνωση. Στις Αζόρες μπορεί να ξεκινήσεις την ημέρα με ήλιο και να καταλήξεις να φοράς αδιάβροχο λίγες ώρες μετά.

Αδιάβροχο και σωστά παπούτσια πεζοπορίας είναι απαραίτητα.

🥾 Οι πεζοπορίες

Το ταξίδι είναι σχεδιασμένο για ανθρώπους που αγαπούν τη φύση και την πεζοπορία.

Θα περπατήσουμε σε δάση, ηφαιστειακά τοπία, μονοπάτια με λάσπη, ορεινές περιοχές και πιθανόν βρεγμένο έδαφος.

Καλή φυσική κατάσταση και κατάλληλα hiking shoes είναι σημαντικά.

🏔️ Η ανάβαση στο Mount Pico

Η ανάβαση στο Pico είναι η μεγαλύτερη πρόκληση του ταξιδιού και απαιτεί καλή φυσική κατάσταση, αντοχή και σωστή προετοιμασία.

Οι καιρικές συνθήκες στο βουνό μπορεί να αλλάξουν γρήγορα και το πρόγραμμα της ανάβασης μπορεί να προσαρμοστεί για λόγους ασφαλείας.

Δεν χρειάζεται να ανέβουν όλοι στην κορυφή — θα υπάρχουν εναλλακτικές επιλογές δραστηριοτήτων.

🌋 Ηφαίστεια παντού

Οι Αζόρες είναι ένα ζωντανό ηφαιστειακό αρχιπέλαγος.

Θα δούμε κρατήρες, ηφαιστειακές λίμνες, γεωθερμικά πεδία και, αν οι συνθήκες και η λειτουργία το επιτρέψουν, θα μπούμε ακόμα και στο εσωτερικό ενός αρχαίου ηφαιστείου.

Ναι… μέσα σε ηφαίστειο. 😎🌋

🚐 Island Hopping

Σε αυτό το ταξίδι δεν μένουμε σε ένα μέρος.

Θα χρησιμοποιήσουμε πτήσεις, πλοία και οδικές μετακινήσεις για να γνωρίσουμε τρία εντελώς διαφορετικά νησιά.

Οι ώρες μετακίνησης και το πρόγραμμα ενδέχεται να προσαρμοστούν ανάλογα με τις καιρικές συνθήκες και τα δρομολόγια.

🔄 Πιθανές αλλαγές

Το πρόγραμμα έχει σχεδιαστεί προσεκτικά, ωστόσο οι Αζόρες είναι ένας προορισμός όπου ο καιρός μπορεί να επηρεάσει τις μετακινήσεις και τις δραστηριότητες.

Σε περίπτωση που χρειαστεί κάποια προσαρμογή, θα φροντίσουμε ώστε η εμπειρία και το περιεχόμενο του ταξιδιού να παραμείνουν στο ίδιο επίπεδο.

🤝 Συνάντηση πριν το ταξίδι

Περίπου έναν μήνα πριν την αναχώρηση θα οργανώσουμε συνάντηση στο γραφείο μας (Αγίας Θέκλας 13, Ψυρρή).

Θα γνωριστούμε, θα συζητήσουμε το πρόγραμμα και θα σας δώσουμε όλες τις απαραίτητες πληροφορίες για την προετοιμασία του ταξιδιού.

Αναβολή Εκδρομής:

Σε περίπτωση αναβολής (μετάθεσης) της εκδρομής σε νέα ημερομηνία με υπαιτιότητα των διοργανωτών, τα χρήματα επιστρέφονται στο ακέραιο σε όσους δεν μπορούν ή δεν επιθυμούν να συμμετάσχουν στις νέες ημερομηνίες.
